Medical cannabis producer Cilo Cybin first in South Africa to launch locally manufactured cannabinoid products with 400-500% higher absorption rate

Johannesburg – Monday, 7 March 2022: Cilo Cybin, the first company in South Africa to win the right to grow, process, package, and sell locally manufactured cannabis products, has launched South Africa’s first oil-based cannabinoid products with a Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SEDDS) that increases efficacy by up to 10 times. Cilo Cybin is the only company using nanotechnology to manufacture local oil-based CBD products in South Africa.

The company aims to list Africa’s first cannabis SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) on the JSE in May 2022. This with a view to buying companies in the fledgling industry alongside genetics and wearable health-device companies in the US and South Africa - Bloomberg Article. SPACs raised $160bn around the world last year but are relatively rare in Africa.

Announcing the launch of Cilo Cybin’s first CBD products, Gabriel Theron, President and CEO of Cilo Cybin, says cannabinoids-based products are on average only +-3-6% bioavailable when orally administered. “Our Smart formulation makes use of cutting-edge Drug Delivery System technologies which enabled Cilo Cybin to increase the cannabinoid bioavailability by up to 500%, significantly increasing the effectiveness of the product.”

Cilo Cybin’s cannabis-based products are formulated by Cannabisness Phyto Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with the Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) and The Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) who collectively forms the ICBT-Cannabis Research Division (ICBT-CRD). Theron says the collaboration is critical to ensure latest scientific approaches to the Cilo Cybin product range. “Our aim is to produce high quality products targeting both the Endo-Cannabinoid System (ECS) and ECS independent mechanisms of action using the highest quality raw materials and its delicate formulation processes.”

Dr. Harry Chiririwa (PhD), Technical Director, at Cannabisiness and Senior Lecture at Vaal University believes that for many South African’s battling daily discomfort, news of Cilo Cybin’s non-scheduled CBD products now manufactured in South Africa couldn't be more exciting. “The use of a new delivery system that is 400-500% more absorbable than capsules, and oils with a great taste is a significant development. Users of Cilo Cybin’s CBD products can now rely on the most effective delivery system of cannabinoid products in South Africa, more specifically to enhance energy, promote and induce relaxation in patients, provide relief from pain and inflammation, and help prevent sleeplessness. Coupled with great taste it promises to be both an enjoyable and most rewarding experience.”

Theron, however, warns that with South Africa’s rapid evolvement of the cannabis industry and massive demand, access to quality products is especially difficult. “There is huge potential for the spread of poor-quality products before adequate detection and interventions are possible. Cilo Cybin provides customers with security, product consistency, and peace of mind when purchasing and using its products. Various research institutes, dosing, and formulation experts with years of experience provide ongoing and valuable scientific input. We are also engaging and collaborating with doctors to timeously prepare for dosing and treatment of acute and chronic conditions.”

The company’s CBD products come in two delivery methods, the first is the traditional tincture/eyedropper bottle, and the second method is a vape/smokable pen. According to Theron traditional oil-based CBD products when ingested take 90 to 120 minutes to take effect. “The vaper product is used if immediate relieve is needed, for example an anxiety attack. The product is inhaled and acts within minutes. Vaping might be seen as controversial by most, however, as our products are more bioavailable, the frequency of use is reduced. The nano oil can then be used after the vape, which will take effect 45 -60 minutes later. We recommend responsible use and only by persons over 18 years of age.”

Referring to Cilo Cybin’s range of devices and longevity supplements, Theron says these are the first of many to come. “Devices include ‘Near Infrared Light Therapy’ that stimulates improved circulation and cellular respiration. Use of the device lends itself to a variety of applications with results that are truly life changing.”
